How to prevent holiday weight gain

It's that time of the year again when we make merry, feast and celebrate, with many calorific treats. Although this year has been a strange one and many of us might be away from family and friends, do take the time to take stock of your fitness over the year and set some fitness goals to achieve for the next year.

Festive seasons are a good time to make merry but it's very easy to pile on the pounds and what starts as a 3 to 4 pound gain can become quickly a 10lb gain. So do be careful!!

Here are some tips to prevent holiday weight gain over the festive season.

1) Drink up!

Drink up- that is- water. Lay off indulging in alcohol and hydrate yourself with water. Have a glass of water before your meal so that you don't feel hungry.

2) Have a bite

Cakes and plum puddings are such high calorific treats that it can put back your weight loss efforts by a lot. But if you really want to indulge, keep it to a bite or two. Savour the taste in your mouth and slowly enjoy the indulgence. But try not to indulge in more!

3) Think fresh!

Don't skimp on fresh fruits and vegetables and get your daily nutrients for the day! Start your day with a healthy breakfast, preferably with some protein which will keep you satiated for the whole day.

4) Check your scale every day

Do check your scale regularly. Remember that it's okay for weight to fluctuate by a few pounds on a daily basis but if it starts creeping up too much, cut back on your calories a bit so that you don't put on weight.

5) Go for a walk

Go for a walk to stretch out your muscles and walk off your indulgences. If you like to finish your workout in the morning, go for a morning run. Or else, head out for a leisurely post-dinner walk to walk off the calories.

6) Rest and relax

It's been a tough year- so don't be too hard on yourself! If you find yourself struggling and stressed out with weight loss, switch your mind off and give your body and mind a well-deserved rest. You can come back to your goals in a few days' time.
