What is the Sirtfood diet?- How did Adele lose all that weight and can Adele's diet help you in weight loss?
Adele caused waves when she unveiled a 45kg weight loss transformation in 2020. Besides employing a personal trainer, Adele went on the Sirtfood diet and triggered a mad wave of frenzy about this diet that has worked quite the miracle. And to top it all off, any diet where you can indulge in red wine and dark chocolate sounds like pure magic.
So what exactly is the Sirtfood diet? And can it help you in weight loss?
This diet claims to help dieters lose up to 3 kilograms per week. And many celebrities are jumping onto this diet bandwagon, touting its weight loss benefits.
Is the diet worth all that hype or is it just another restrictive diet fad like the cabbage soup diet? Will this diet be so restrictive that it might end up in binge eating later on? Let's break down the pros and cons here.
What is the Sirtfood diet?
The Sirtfood Diet was designed by UK nutritionists Aidan
Goggins and Glen Matten, who published a guide and a recipe book in
2016.The diet focuses on sirtuins or proteins in your body that specialise in cellular health and metabolism which helps to reduce inflammation, regulate metabolism and burn fat. Sirtuins
can be found in foods like kale, extra-virgin olive oil, buckwheat,
matcha, blueberries and arugula.
The diet includes a range of wholesome, low calories foods, plenty of protein, fruit and green juice. Participants are also allowed to indulge in dark chocolate, red wine and coffee on their days off.
How long is the diet? How many calories can I eat?
For the first three days, you can eat only 1000 calories a day — one sirtuin-packed meal and three green juices.
For the next four days, you can eat up to 1500 calories a day — two sirtuin-packed meals and two green juices.
After that week, there is no standard plan and dieters are allowed to eat as many sirtfood meals as they like. So it's essentially a seven day plan with the option to continue.
What's in the green juice?
Below are the ingredients for the green juice which are blended together.
Ingredients:
- 75g kale
- 30g rocket
- 5g flat-leaf parsley
- 2–3 large stalks (150g) green celery, including its leaves
- ½ medium green apple
- juice of ½ lemon
- ½ level tsp matcha green tea
Can I exercise on this diet?
Daily exercise is recommended on the diet.

Below are all the sirtfoods.

The foods are supposed to boost muscle growth because they activate your “skinny gene,” which allegedly mimics the effects of diet and exercise.
Can the Sirtfood diet help you in weight loss?
The Sirtfood diet is a very restrictive diet and you should plan out your meals in advance, in order to stick to the plan. Since the food choices are very limited, you might feel shaky and lightheaded in the initial stages of the diet.
If you're doing intense exercise or have underlying health conditions, this diet is not recommended. Because the calorie intake is low (1000 calories), it will eventually lead to weight loss. A similar 1000 to 1200 calorie diet based on the Mediterannean diet or Dash diet might be easier to follow since the food choices are not so restricted and might yield more sustainable results.
